How to distinguish between Cantonese nine and dog

2018-05-03 04:48:56

Cantonese is a dialect of Chinese spoken mainly in the provinces of China, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao Special Administrative Region, and overseas Chinese communities. It is a branch of Chinese.

"Nine" in Cantonese is pronounced as /gau2/, with a smooth tone and no curved accent. The word "dog" is pronounced in Cantonese as /gau2/ (and in some areas as /gau3/), with an upward curved accent, due to the guttural sound of the Cantonese "g". Therefore, although the pronunciation of "nine" and "dog" in Cantonese is similar, you can tell the difference between them by listening closely to the pronunciation.
